Dr. Peter M. Shedden is a board-certified neurosurgeon with over four decades of experience specializing in brain, spine, and nerve conditions. As the founder of GHNC, he is dedicated to advancing neurosurgical care and promoting wellness through innovative treatments and lifestyle medicine.

Dr. Peter M. Shedden is a highly respected board-certified neurosurgeon with an extensive career spanning over four decades. He has dedicated his life to the advancement of brain, spine, and nerve care, providing expert diagnosis, surgical treatment, and non-surgical management for complex neurological conditions. Since founding Greater Houston Neurosurgery Center (GHNC) in 1997, Dr. Shedden has remained at the forefront of neurosurgical innovation, utilizing minimally invasive techniques, cerebrovascular procedures, microneurosurgery, and stereotactic radiosurgery to enhance patient outcomes. His commitment to excellence extends beyond the operating room, as he actively participates in medical research, education, and patient advocacy.

Throughout his career, Dr. Shedden has played a pivotal role in expanding neurosurgical care in North Houston and Montgomery County. He has been instrumental in establishing comprehensive stroke programs, advancing brain and spinal cord injury prevention initiatives, and introducing groundbreaking surgical technologies such as the NICO BrainPath System for minimally invasive brain surgery. Additionally, he has led efforts to promote holistic patient wellness, integrating Lifestyle Medicine principles to help prevent and manage chronic diseases.

EDUCATION

Dr. Shedden earned his medical degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario before completing his neurosurgical training at the University of Toronto. He then pursued a fellowship in neurotrauma and cerebrovascular neurosurgery at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto. In 1992, he moved to the United States, where he joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, specializing in cerebrovascular surgery and neurotrauma. In 1997, he transitioned to private practice, founding the Greater Houston Neurosurgery Center (GHNC) to provide advanced neurosurgical care to the Greater Northwest Houston region.

Dr. Shedden is highly trained in all aspects of neurosurgery, including cerebrovascular procedures, neurotrauma, brain tumors, microneurosurgery, functional neurosurgery (such as trigeminal neuralgia procedures), spinal surgery, and peripheral nerve surgery, including brachial plexus treatments. With over 30 years of experience in stereotactic radiosurgery, he is also an expert in Gamma Knife procedures, offering advanced, minimally invasive treatment for neurological conditions.

Dr. Shedden currently serves as the Medical Director at CHI St. Luke’s Health – The Woodlands in The Woodlands, TX. He has been instrumental in advancing minimally invasive brain surgery in Montgomery County, introducing state-of-the-art technologies such as the Gamma Knife Perfexion and the NICO BrainPath system. Throughout his career, he has held numerous leadership positions in hospitals and the community and is a past president of the Texas Association of Neurological Surgeons (TANS).

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Shedden is the Founder and President of the Greater Houston Neuroscience Institute (GHNI), which oversees the Greater Houston Neurosurgery Center (GHNC) and two 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. The Greater Houston Foundation for Medical Research and Education (GHFRME) supports the ThinkFirst program, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries in children, teens, and young adults. Regional Resource Center for Supra Adults (RRCSA) focuses on enhancing the overall well-being of individuals aged 55 and older, helping them improve their quality of life while utilizing their knowledge and experience to contribute to modern society.Through his leadership, Dr. Shedden continues to drive innovation in Neurosurgery, Medical research, and community education, improving both patient care and public health initiatives.
